This is super fun! I've got two new updates to share: One about my first series, and one about my newest project, which returns to one of my oldest story worlds. First update: VAMPIRESYou know my super-popular (and oldest) series, Fat Vampire? The one that's sold a million copies? The series that was bought by SyFy and turned into a TV show called Reginald the Vampire? The TV show in which I TEEEEEEECHNICALLY have a cameo -- appearing for upwards of four seconds as the essential character "Uncredited Guy in Window"? In case you don't remember that particular Shakespearean tour de force, here's a screen-shot of my cinematic brilliance: Anyway, I'm finally getting close to pulling the trigger on the Kickstarter campaign for Fat Vampire's special edition anniversary omnibus. It only took me like two years, after putting the campaign up for pre-launch. Go here and click the black "Notify Me on Launch" button if you're interested in this cool special edition. That way, you won't miss the campaign. (I'll launch it in October.) But here's something cool to go with it: I actually hosted and recorded a whole companion podcast for the TV show that's never aired before. Each episode is me with one or two of the actors in the TV show, talking about the show, the episode, their backgrounds, how they chose to act for their character, etc. The podcast never got officially off the ground, so I asked one of the producers about it. He replied with the most dangerous thing a person can say to a writer: "Oh, I imagine you can do whatever you want with that." So, cool. I'm going to start releasing the episodes of the official Reginald the Vampire companion podcast, beginning soon. And by the way, releasing the podcast is part of my nefarious scheme to get you interested in the Fat Vampire Kickstarter campaign, so ... you know ... you're definitely soon to be hypnotized into backing it so you can get the super-special anniversary omnibus. (I'm going to make that omnibus very cool, with bonus stuff!) Here's the link to follow the campaign again, so you don't get neck strain looking slightly upward for the other link. Second update: UNICORNSOMG, you guys ... forget all of the false-starts I may have previously announced about my next writing project. All other book plans have been postponed because Sean and I are going to return to the Unicorn Western universe instead! You remember Unicorn Western, right? It's like if Stephen King was on acid when he wrote The Dark Tower: If you haven't read it before, grab your copy of Unicorn Western here. It's the book I want on my tombstone. Unicorn Western was the beginning of the Truant & Platt writing team. We'd never written anything together before (hell, I'd never written ANYTHING together with ANYONE before) and this was what we came up with. Talk about starting strong. And also weird. After finishing Western, Sean and I then wrote Unicorn Genesis. The plan was -- and remains -- to finish the series with Unicorn Apocalypse. We're taking a detour first, however, to set the stage for the epicness that will be Apocalypse, by writing another book in the world to tie it all together: Unicorn Heathens. I am beyond giddy to return to Clint and Edward's fantastical world! You guys have no idea how much I've missed it. The time that Sean and I spent writing the Unicorn Western books (there were 9 in the core series, all of which are in the snazzy omnibus pictured above) was some of the best writing time I've ever spent. It was SO MUCH FUN! After a few years figuring myself and my career back out after some disruption (long story), returning full circle to Unicorn Western is nothing short of coming home. We're starting work on Unicorn Heathens now, to be followed immediately by Unicorn Apocalypse. I'm not sure how long it will take for us to finish them, because I'm still fighting a torrent of competing obligations (including the Artisan Author Kickstarter campaign for authors, which ends in just a few days) ... and because honestly, I haven't written with any consistency for a long time. This is the perfect project to dive back in on, but it won't come out with the blistering speed we used to be known for. (That might return, though. I just need to find my rhythm again.) *** So that's a pretty cool update, right? A forthcoming Fat Vampire special edition with bonus material AND two new books in the Unicorn Western world! My old-school readers must be soiling themselves with excitement right now. Hell -- maybe even some of you who are newer to me as well. :) I'll keep you updated. Until then ... happy trails! JT |
Behind-the-scenes book talk with a bestselling author and his unicorn. Join 6000+ readers of my 150 books as I share stories behind the stories, unbox the creative process, and lead a disobedient "artisan author" movement to treat readers like rockstars and make the book world suck less.
You know, creativity is a strange and wonderful thing. It refuses to be put in a box, at least for me. I've always been a writer. That's what I tell people who meet me and see all the books I've published: "How long have I been writing? Well, 13 years professionally ... but I've 'been a writer' all my life." But back in the day, I also used to draw a lot. Both of my parents are painters -- not the kind who paint houses, but the kind who make and sell art to hang on walls. Both of my kids are...
Happy Saturday! You're going to absolutely love this. I tried to do one thing and ended up with something so much cooler. Something that you, as one of my faithful readers, will dig the hell out of. As part of the promo blitz for my new book (don't get excited; I wrote this one for authors), I asked my friend and constant collaborator Sean Platt to join me for a little recorded discussion. The goal was to chat about how we Sean and I had ALWAYS broken rules as a writing team -- NEVER obeyed...
I got an email from a reader named Dana the other day, asking a question about whether I “see” my stories in my head as I write them. I wasn’t sure at first. It took some thinking. Because yes, I sort of see them … but not in the same way I saw this in my living room at the time: Rico thinks he's a lot smaller than he actually is. I told Dana that it’s actually both ways for me. Which was intriguing, because I’d never thought about it before — and because it doesn’t make much sense that I...
